Petland is still selling dogs in Manatee County despite a ban on the retail sale of dogs and cats.

According to the Herald Tribune, this ban just went into effect this week after the county commission voted last year on the ban. Petland has two stores in Manatee County and is challenging the new ordinance.

Petland Sarasota and Petland Bradenton filed a lawsuit against the county on November 29th last year but just lost in court. However, the judge granted a 45-day stay on implementing the ordinance, giving the two Petland stores time to sell dogs and cats while they appeal the decision.

Sarasota County banned the retail sale of dogs in 2016 and was in a three-year legal battle with Petland Sarasota. The owners at the time moved Petland Sarasota to the Manatee County side of University Parkway in 2019 at the tail end of that legal dispute.
