SARASOTA-BRADENTON (SNN TV) – Sarasota-Bradenton International may look much different a year from now.

The Herald-Tribune reports you can expect many changes as SRQ undergoes a 165 million dollar expansion of its facilities.

SRQ has expanded significantly, from flying to 15 cities in 2018 to 56 now, and from servicing 1.4 million passengers to an expected 3.8 million in 2022.

The airport’s baggage system will be upgraded so if a machine breaks, baggage will be diverted to another machine rather than moved by hand. $11 million of this upgrade is from the airport, about $11 million is from state grants, and $25 million is from the federal government.

SRQ CEO Rick Piccolo says a new ground transportation center will be more efficient and keep people out of the weather.

A new customs facility, terminal, and observation area to watch planes come and go are also in the works.
