FLORIDA (SNN TV) – Governor DeSantis releases a plan to take control of the Reedy Creek Improvement District and make Disney assume the $700 million in debt.

A public notice says a bill will be introduced this year to give the state government control of the board that oversees the large Disney property, according to the Herald-Tribune.

A law from the 1960s allows Disney to govern its own properties and levy its own taxes to pay for things such as public safety. A law passed in 2022 dissolves that district by June, and this proposed bill would give the governor control of the area.

This all came after Disney criticized the Parental Rights in Education law, dubbed “Don’t Say Gay” by critics.

Opponents accuse the governor of trying to take control of a private company via a state-run board.
