MANATEE COUNTY (SNN TV) – Local developer Carlos Beruff could soon build thousands of new homes in East Manatee County.

This comes after the Manatee County Commission granted him a win to send additional comprehensive plan changes to state agencies. The Herald-Tribune described the commission meeting as tense after lasting for hours after hundreds of residents expressed concern and opposition over his East River Ranch plans.

The nonprofit Myakka Elephant Ranch also was concerned about impacts to its elephants and future expansion plans, while other residents accuse the commission of not protecting property of those who have lived in east Manatee for years. Development in Manatee County has drifted east for a while. The ‘Future Development Area Boundary’ is supposed to constrain development east — the line is the furthest the county will provide water and sewer services.

But cracks in the boundary continue to emerge after proposals and approvals for SMR Taylor Ranch, Gamble Creek Village, and now this development.
