TALLAHASSEE (SNN TV) – Governor Ron DeSantis will likely be able to run for president without resigning. That’s because the Florida legislature passed a bill that gives any governor the OK to run without resigning.

The Herald-Tribune reports SB 7050 passed along party lines Friday, with Democrats voting against the bill. The legislation “clarifies” that the state’s “resign to run” law doesn’t apply to those campaigning for president or vice president. It also makes changes to a controversial election law passed in 2021 in Florida.

Republicans argue the provision only makes clear what’s already allowed, but Democrats blast the measure, with one Democrat asking, “Why are we signing off on allowing Ron DeSantis the ability to not do his job?”

Democrats also blasted the bill’s changes to third party voter registration. It reduces the amount of time organizations have to submit applications, which Democrats argue will affect black and brown voters disproportionately.
