TALLAHASSEE (SNN TV) – Abortion rights supporters want Floridians to vote on the issue.

The newly formed Floridians Protecting Freedom will hold a news conference in Tallahassee Monday to start a campaign to pass a constitutional amendment supporting abortion rights, the Herald-Tribune reports.

Floridians Protecting Freedom argues, “The decision to have an abortion belongs to Floridians, their families, and those they trust.” Florida voters approved an amendment in 1980 that established privacy rights. The Florida Supreme Court in 1989 set the precedent that privacy protects abortion rights.

However, Florida Republicans are asking the state Supreme Court to reject legal precedents in a case involving Florida’s 15-week abortion ban. If that ban is upheld, the 6-week ban will replace it.

Supporters need 891,523 valid signatures by February 1, 2024 and get Supreme Court approval for this to be on the 2024 ballot.
