SARASOTA (SNN TV) – Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s Sarasota campus is recertified as a Level II Trauma Center.

It’s the county’s only trauma center, meaning it’s equipped with advanced treatments, technology, and highly skilled trauma surgeons and subspecialists who offer round-the-clock lifesaving care.

The Herald-Tribune reports Florida trauma centers undergo recertification every seven years to prove they’re complying with state rules that govern the higher levels of care that trauma centers provide.

In its first renewal survey since opening, the SMH trauma team met or exceeded all national benchmarks.

The Sarasota County Public Hospital Board approved the funds and resources necessary to open the local trauma center in 2015. The trauma team cared for more than 1,00 patients that year; now it treats 4,800 patients a year.
