VENICE, Fla. (SNN TV) – The annual Shark Tooth Fishing Tournament in Venice is around the corner.
Area boat captains are donating their time and vessels to 25 to 30 athletes with disabilities.
In 2002, the Venice Police Department Marine Patrol partnered with the Sarasota County Special Olympics to plan a fishing tournament for Special Olympics athletes. The first event had 10 athletes and four boat captains.
Since then, the tourney regularly begins the Thursday after Labor Day in partnership with The Haven, an organization that supports local athletes with disabilities.
The event begins at 7 a.m. September 7 at Crow’s Nest Marina in Venice at 1968 Tarpon Center Drive. For more information, you can visit the Venice government’s website here.
