SARASOTA – Sarasota Police Department is warning residents to be careful next time they pick up the phone.

A spokesperson with SPD says their front desk received several calls from concerned residents after they received a call from SPD asking for donations and personal information.

Genevieve Judge says that no law enforcement agency would ever call demanding money or personal information over the phone.

“We just want to let folks know that this is a phone scam that we’re aware of and we want them to be aware of it,” said Judge. “That our officers and our civilians would never call identify themselves and ask for personal information.”

SPD says to immediately hang up the phone and to report the call. A similar phone scam happened earlier this month with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
