SARASOTA – Dereck Whittenburg was part of the improbable, storybook run that ended with the North Carolina State Wolfpack upsetting the Houston Cougars for the 1983 NCAA Championship with a miracle play for the winning basket as time ran out.
Jim Valvano was the head coach of that NC State team, and Whittenburg was the captain. Valvano was the inspiration of the Jimmy V Foundation that raises money for cancer research. He was also a good friend of Dick Vitale who has raised more than $25 million with his annual gala in the name of pediatric cancer research and the Jimmy V Foundation.
