NORTH PORT, Fla. (SNN TV) – Storms and downpours stranded drivers and caused a fire in North Port.

In a press release, North Port Fire Rescue said firefighters went to a structure fire on the 8100 block of Amendola Avenue. Fire Rescue didn’t see anything from the outside, but did smell smoke.

A structure fire response was requested as crews forced entry to investigate. Once inside, firefighters encountered a haze and then noticed a hole in the roof caused by a lightning strike.

The electricity was controlled at the breaker panel before firefighters made their way to the roof to cover the damage with a tarp to prevent further water damage from the continuing rain.

The homeowner was contacted by phone, and that person will contact contractors for evaluation and repairs. No injuries were reported.

North Port Fire Rescue also responded to three vehicles stranded in high water at 5:04 p.m. at Symco and William St., 5:31 p.m. at Woodbridge and Papillon, and 5:39 p.m. at Salford and Mulgrave Ave. No injuries were reported in any of them.
