SARASOTA – The Team Tony Cancer Foundation hosted their first Shared Steps 5k & Fun Run. The inaugural 5k was held during the 10th annual Gran Fondo at Nathan Benderson Park Sunday morning.

The walk help raise awareness and support for programs offered at the non-profit for those on the Suncoast battling cancer, survivors, and their caregivers.

Founder of Team Tony Cancer Foundation Tony McEachern  says he decided to include a 5k for non-cyclist to also join in on the fun. Participants ran or walked 3.1 miles around Nathan Benderson Park.

Fern Millman and Karen Berney breast cancer survivors with the group Survivors in Sync chose to walk to show their support to Team Tony.

“It’s a great service because there are so many people you don’t even realize and to be hooked up with someone whose been through the same treatment is very important cause it’s very scary let me tell you,” said Berney.

“You start to go ‘Who do I call, where can I rely on somebody, what do I do now, how do I make decisions?” said Millman.

More than 100 runners registered to run. McEachern says today’s success will hopefully allow for more 5K in the future.
