SARASOTA – Sarasota puts pressure on Florida lawmakers to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, “ERA.”  Coming from an effort in the 1920s, it seeks to give equality to all people regardless of their sex. The Senate and House passed the ERA in 1972. Today, the ratification still needs three-fourths approval from the states. Only 1 state is left to make this happen, and Florida could be one of them.  Earlier this week, State Representative Margaret Good and other activists sought to get the approval of a resolution on the matter.

Representative Margaret Good shares why it’s important to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.

“If you look at the pay gap between men and women, there’s still a substantial pay gap,” Margaret Good said. “So, there’s a lot of work still left to be done, and I think one of those things is creating the legal underpinning that says that women and men should be treated equally.”

Monday, Sarasota City Commissioners passed a resolution in support of the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment in Florida. Next Tuesday, the resolution is scheduled to be heard in a meeting with Manatee County, Sarasota County, and Venice City Commissioners.
