SARASOTA – The Suncoast is walking to end violence against women.

“America is a really dangerous place for women because of the population of guns,” said Moms Demand Action Sarasota’s group leader, Ashley Murphy. “It’s nothing against guns, but it’s the gun violence that we’re trying to impact.”

According to every town for gun safety, in an average month, 52 American women are shot to death, this is one of the reasons why men and women participated in the ‘Walk With Us’ at Payne Park.

Gulf Coast Chapter UN Women USA organizes its annual, ‘Walk With Us’ event to raise awareness and funds to combat violence against women.

“The problem is very deep-seeded,” said Gulf Coast Chapter UN Women USA’s President, Scott Osborne “And often it’s secret. People don’t know about it, they don’t hear about it, and it has really dramatic consequences. And we want people to be more aware of that. “

It’s an opportunity for local organizations and other like-minded people to come together to unite for this cause.

Moms Demand Action Sarasota focuses on how gun violence protection is something everyone can fight for.

“Overall, it’s something we all have a part in, we all have skin in the game, and it’s a matter of stepping up and taking action,” said Murphy.

A walker, Stephanie Flynn, participated in the event because she says she thinks it’s important to rally so we can live in a world where everyone has a chance to thrive and be successful.

“When I have children someday, I want to make sure that I’m raising my children in a world where they don’t have to deal with the violence that my grandparents, and my parents, and that I dealt with,” said Stephanie Flynn.

About 70 people attended the walk and they have raised more than ten thousand dollars. The USA Gulf Coast Chapter hosts events all year round. For more information, you can visit their website
