NORTH PORT – A driver is shot and killed on I-75. North Port Police Department is investigating.

A shooting closes down a chunk of southbound I-75 lanes from South Sarasota County to King’s Highway.

North Port spokesman, Josh Taylor, says the shooting happened early Saturday morning at 3:45.

Taylor says the driver died on the scene just south of the Toledo Blade exit.

“Since then we’ve been trying to work backward,” Taylor said.

NPPD, North Port Fire Department and Florida Highway Patrol are investigating.

“Where the shooting happened we’re still trying to figure that out; how far back was he shot and came to a rest?” Taylor said.

Taylor says detectives believe:

“He was shot through the door of the vehicle as he was driving,” Taylor said.

So it’s paramount to close down the highway to investigate this homicide.

“Getting some of those evidence like shell casings and things like that is unbelievably important to an investigation,” Taylor said.

All southbound lanes between Sumter Blvd and King’s Highway in Charlotte County were closed.

As of 4:50 in the afternoon all southbound lanes of I-75 opened.

While the delays were frustrating, Taylor says the family deserves justice.

“Nobody deserves to be shot and killed,” Taylor said. “And, we’re going to work as hard as we possibly can to hold those who are responsible for this accountable.”
