PORT CHARLOTTE (WSNN) – Charlotte County health officials sent out advisory warning residents of an increase in mosquito-borne diseases.

It comes after the health department confirmed a human case of the West Nile Virus on Friday in Port Charlotte, and they’re concerned more people could become ill.

A sentinel chicken tested positive for West Nile Virus infection. So, the risk of transmission to humans has increased.

Charlotte County mosquito control and DOH-Charlotte are continuing surveillance and prevention efforts.

And health officials are reminding you to protect yourself from getting bitten: drain and cover.

Drain garbage cans, pool covers, buckets, or other containers of any outstanding water.

And cover your skin by wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts. And using bug spray.
