SARASOTA, Fla. (WSNN) — The Sarasota Police Department said it has seen an increase in vehicle burglaries, especially in the Golden Gate Point area.

Since early October, police have investigated 10 vehicle burglaries in the area just east of the John Ringling Causeway. None of the cars were locked, police said.

On Friday, police said a car was stolen, with a spare key left inside, along with two other burglaries in unlocked cars. In the most recent incidents, loose change, cash, phone cards, and gas credit cards were also stolen, police said.

Since Jan. 1, Sarasota police have investigated 286 reports of vehicle burglaries. Eighty-five percent of those cases involved unlocked cars, police said.
