SARASOTA (WSNN) – Rain or shine, the heroes on the Suncoast are celebrating Veterans Day.

“Just remember, as you’re walking down the street, that guy you see limped over can hardly move; 20/30/40 years, he was a bad-a**; he was out there,” Marine Corps Veteran, Sonny Bywaters said. “He’s the reason we can do things today.”

On Veterans Day, Bywaters wants to remind you to thank the heroes who served our country.

While ETA makes its way to the Suncoast, the veterans are not letting the storm ‘rain on their parade.’

“It goes back to why we were in the service,” Bywaters said. “They tell you to go do it, and you go do it. It makes no difference, weather, or anything else. You get the job done.”

The Suncoast continued their ceremony at Sunshine VFW Post 3233, recognizing veterans of the years, holding prayers, and singing together.

“We love our brothers and sisters, so we marched in spite of it all,” Navy veteran, Jim Berger said. “Rain or shine, that doesn’t deter our troops, it wasn’t going to deter us.”

Berger, remembers riding out a Category 4 hurricane at sea on a ship.

It’s all part of their Remembrance Day.

“Veterans Day is like my Christmas,”Combat Marine Corps Veteran, Stephanie Petersen said. “I love this day. It’s a day we can get together and reignite that camaraderie and we can also spend time together, honor each other.

Peterson was deployed to Afghanistan twice as a combat marine.

“You could make someone’s day if you just said, ‘thank you for your service,'” Petersen said.

Even though not all veterans are serving in uniform today, they’re serving their community EVERY DAY. So from SNN to our veterans, we want to say ‘Thank you.’
