SARASOTA (WSNN) – A sewage spill shuts down a Sarasota neighborhood Friday afternoon.

A Verizon subcontractor installing 5G cables drilled through the city’s 16-inch force main at Central Avenue and 17th Street.

It released about 15,000 gallons of raw sewage on the roadway.

To make repairs, the city closed off the area on 17th Street at Cocoanut Avenue and on Central Avenue from 16th to 18th Street.

Crews worked quickly to isolate the spill closing off valves and recovering about 1500 gallons of the sewage.

City officials are collecting water samples in Whitaker Bayou. But they say you should not swim in the area until sample results are clear.
