SARASOTA – Newtown’s very own are making sure no one goes hungry this Thanksgiving.
“It’s not just a me thing, it’s a we thing, so we’re very thankful to our community,” said Organizer of Hunger for Knowledge Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway, Ed James III.
For the past six years, Ed James III and Antonio Rivers have put together the Hunger for Knowledge, Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway in Newtown in a way to honor the Legacy of River’s late grandfather, and James late Father who were both civil rights icons in Newtown
“This year officially it’ll be a thousand turkeys that we have given away to families here in the Newtown Community,” said James.
James and River say the Newtown community has given so much to them, which is why they felt the need to give back
“This community is a food desert, this a food desert and we are coming off of the heels of the COVID-19 crisis, in fact, there has been a recent spike. So what we thought was it would be imperative for us to continue to give especially this year because so many people have lost loved ones, they’ve lost resources, they’ve lost jobs and we want to be able to put a smile on people’s faces,” said James.
Rain or shine, turkeys were handed out to whoever showed up
“They’re getting cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes; they’re getting the whole works,” said James.
“This is where I grew up at, these are the people that put their faith in me and gave me the courage to keep pushing, even though everything we’ve been through in life, so giving back, it feels good, God blessed me so why not become a blessing to others, said Organizer of Hunger for Knowledge Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway, Antonio Rivers.
