SARASOTA (WSNN) – On the last night of Hanukkah, a Sarasota senior living community, Aviva, celebrates the lighting of the menorah.

Rabbi Jonathan Katz led a prayer and song to conclude the Jewish holiday.

The celebration involves lighting eight candles, one each night; singing special songs, reciting the Hallel prayer, playing the dreidel game, and of course eating foods fried in oil, such as latkes and sufganiyot, jelly doughnuts.

While it’s a fun holiday, it’s also a time of remembrance…

“We light the candles as a remembrance of the miracle that happened in ancient times where there wasn’t enough oil for the eternal light in the temple to last,” Rabbi Katz said.

Aviva residents spent the evening dancing and enjoying music all while remaining six-feet apart.
