SARASOTA – BMXers from across the globe made their way to the Suncoast dirt roads this weekend to compete in the 2021 Citrus Classic Nationals.
“It’s a bicycle, their racing bicycles around a dirt track with people from their same age group and that’s basically what they’re doing out here, their racing over jumps and obstacles and turns,” said Director of Events for USA BMX, Chris Luna.
Riders range from ages 2 and under and go all the way to 61 and over.
“So we have over a thousand riders here competing this weekend and some of them did all three days because it was a three day event, some did two, and at any given time we’ve had a thousand riders going on out there,” said Luna.
So what makes Sarasota a destination for BMXers?
“April will be 47 years this track has been here, this track has been here 47 years come April and the group here at Sarasota BMX is like no other across the country, they have so much experience here, they run weekly races, week in and week out and they know exactly how to make people feel welcome and we couldn’t do it without the partnership we have with them,” said Luna.
Luna says BMX USA is glad to be racing after everything that happened in 2020
“With everything that’s going on in the world today it’s kind of cool to get a breath of fresh air and actually see some Olympians back out here and seeing them do what they love to do and what they actually do for a living,” said Luna.
