SARASOTA – A year into the pandemic, and the Van Wezel purple colored building on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Newtown is offering more than just counseling services.

“Families can come in and they can get a box of food and get meat, cereal, and perishable items, canned goods, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and anything they pretty much may need, masks, gloves, hand sanitizer,” said SCLO Volunteer, Kiara Williams.

For the past year, April Glasco, CEO and founder of Second Chance Last Opportunity, alongside volunteers and other members of the community have come together to distribute these items, in hopes, no one goes hungry.  SCLO volunteer Kiara Williams, says although it has been a year, the need has increased.

“There’s a lot of families that aren’t able to provide based on the fact that they may not have a job, or they got laid off so it has increased it has definitely increased, we always have new people that we are signing up daily with numbers, so they can get access to us and get the help that they need, so its steady, its growing, right now we have like 500 plus families that we are serving in the community,” said Williams.

SCLO is seeking volunteers and donations

“Yes, donations, donations are always open for anyone who would like to make a contribution to Second Chance Last Opportunity,” said Dr. April Glasco, CEO and Founder of SCLO.

Another volunteer says none of this would be possible without Glasco

“She’s always giving she always make sure that everybody gets and she’s just a good person with a good heart that just wants to help the community so we can come together and do better in the community, and have a resource in the community, in the black community, so it’s a good thing that she’s here, we appreciate her being here,” said SCLO Volunteer, Tracie Cheaves.

The organization is transformed into a drive-thru food dispensary every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Where folks can line up and get cooked meals, fresh produce, and other essential items.
