SARASOTA (WSNN) –  Sarasota Military Academy Students are saving lives one pint at a time.

The Suncoast Blood Centers is wrapping up its two-day blood drive, Friday, at the high school.

It’s the fourth and final one of the school year with more than 40 donations from students.

The blood center says SMA is nationally recognized for having the most per capita of students donating blood. This is a 10-year record for a relatively small school.

The school nurse, Leslie Collier says it’s because the students know their duty.

“Even though the students aren’t old enough to serve their country, they are old enough to serve their community,” said Collier. “What better way to serve their community and give back; do what the soldiers give as their last full measure of devotion,  to donate the gift of life the most precious gift that you can donate.”

Each unit of blood saves three lives. The blood center says there’s always a need for blood and platelets for military people, everyday surgeries, and cancer patients.

Blood collectors from high school students usually make up about 25-percent of its annual collection.
