SARASOTA (WSNN) – The Asolo Rep Theatre is ‘Staging its Future’ with its groundbreaking on Phase One of its Koski Center Expansion project.

The theatre will go from using a repurposed industrial space for its rehearsals to a state-of-the-art, two-story “Super Rehearsal Hall”. The new building is to be built alongside the existing facilities located on Tallevast Road.

Staff and supporters celebrated the groundbreaking on Tuesday.

It’s expected to accommodate full-size set pieces, an expanded costume shop with storage, a recording studio, conference rooms, office space for stage management and guest artists, a physical therapy room, and flexible studios.

This is all in an effort to centralize rehearsals and all production elements, provide opportunities to host educational and public events.

“This will help to bring efficiency to what is often chaos,” Asolo Rep’s Production Manager & Operation’s director, Vic Meyrich said. “And it gives the ability for an actor to walk within the building and see what’s going on in another space or the crew commoner and look at a rehearsal.”

Phase one includes the super rehearsal hall, lobby, and the joining of the two existing buildings on the Koski’s Center property.

Construction begins next week. And the project is expected to be finished in June of next year.

Staff and artists plan to use the space as early as Fall 2022.
