SARASOTA – On your mark, get set GO! Powerboats have touched down on Lido Key.

“It’s an event that every member of every family from every social economic level or status or interest can truly enjoy,” said Former Powerboat Racer, Dan Lawrence.

Powerboats biggest fans got front row seats for the kickoff of Suncoast Summer fests off shore grand prix races.

“We’ve got a ton of people out here on the beach, it’s a great event for the whole community, we got food out here, drinks, everybody seems to be having a good time, were just happy to be here on the beautiful beach and it’s just a great venue for p1 to bring the races to, hopefully we can keep coming here for a long time,” said Business Development for Powerboat P1, Thomas Covington.

Power boats range from 20 feet all the way to 50 feet Geico boats.

“They’ll reach speeds of about 150 mph out there so it’s going to be fun to watch and hopefully everybody stays safe but I think we’ll see some pretty close racing as well,” said Covington.

More than 50 racers registered for the grand prix on lido key.

“This is like the biggest draw to the Sarasota community for a single event, it’s the boat races, I know that people around the country fly in for it it’s something everyone looks forward to and it’s something that Sarasota can be proud of,” said Lawrence.

Lawrence says Suncoast waters could not be a better fit for the races

“The Sarasota offshore grand prix is kind of considered the Indy 500 of our industry, and Sarasota, it’s a great race, and perfect race today by the way,” said Lawrence.

Suncoast Summerfest continues this week with several events leading up to a firework show on the 4th of July, for a full list of events you can visit their website here.
