MANATEE COUNTY – The worlds largest solar-powered battery is powering up in Manatee County.

Florida Power and Light Company gave a sneak peek into their progress today.

The technology consists of more than 50-thousand specialized batteries that will store solar energy from one of the company’s solar sites.

Each specialized battery weighs over 200 pounds and can store the equivalent of about  two thousand iPhone batteries.

“This project benefits customers in two ways. One, it saves customers 50 million dollars over the life of the project. The second way is it’s cutting approximately 1 million tons of carbon that otherwise would’ve been emitted into the atmosphere, which is good for everyone,” said Vice President of Development for FPL, Matt Valle.

Eventually the old plant will shut down and power will come from the solar powered battery.

FPL officials say the battery is roughly 75 percent completely and should begin serving customers later this year.
