SARASOTA COUNTY (WSNN) – Hundreds on the Suncoast ran to spread awareness about the foster care system, Saturday morning.

Bridge to life hosted its 11th annual Superhero 5k at Nathan Benderson Park.

About a thousand runners came out to support the need of the more than 16-hundred kids in foster care across Sarasota, Manatee, and DeSoto counties.

Every name of a child in the system has their name chalked on the sidewalk, as well as individually printed on a runner’s bibs.

“There are all kinds of stories of impact where maybe a family adopts, and maybe it’s just that a kid feels seen and heard. And it all matters,” Bridge a Life Community Engagement Director Jody Jester said. “All 1000 bibs have a different child’s name on it, so just imagine that kid showing up and seeing like there is one person today who is running just for you.”

Bridge A Life provides wrap-around support for families who plan to foster or adopt, through trauma-enforced training, financial assistance, adoption grants, and more.

The need is there and there are ways to help. You don’t have to foster to help the kids, you can donate clothes or volunteer your time.
