FLORIDA (SNN)– The Florida Department of Health stated that Hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery should not be options for those under the age of 18 throughout the state.
In the press release, the health department says that children are too young to decide if they want to undergo gender transforming surgery while their brains are still developing.
But local trans allies in the area say this statement is harmful to young trans kids throughout the state.
“Lgbtq+ youth, in particular, are vulnerable to so many adverse health outcomes and we want to do everything we can to support them and that includes mental, physical, emotional; all of it,” said ALSO Youth Program Manager, Veronica Graveline.
A study done by the Trevor project found that in 2021 52 percent of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide.
