SARASOTA (WSNN) – Empty hallways and vacant storefronts. That is how you can describe Sarasota Square Mall these days.
The mall, which is located along the busy US-41 highway, has very few open stores and its food court is currently without any open restaurants.
Warehouse giant Costco shares a parking lot with the mall, and it was busy Monday afternoon, but the rest of the mall was like a ghost town.
The other sign of life at the mall, AMC Theatres, was not yet open when we visited the mall Monday, and according to its website, its first showing on Tuesday is not until 4 p.m.
We spoke with a mall walker who has been coming to Sarasota Square Mall since 2004. She told us that she loves walking the mall but misses the stores and restaurants that used to be there.
Sarasota Square Mall is owned by Illinois-based Torburn Partners. We reached out to Torburn Partners and mall management, but have not heard back at this time.
UPDATE: The Afternoon Edition’s Marco La Manno spoke with the Sarasota Herald-Tribune’s Laura Finaldi, who originally wrote a story for our partners at the paper about the mall’s food court which is currently empty.
