SARASOTA – 2020 edges out 2015 and 2016 and breaks the record for the planet’s hottest September. September 2020 was 1.75°F above the 20th century average of 59.0°F. That’s 0.04°F above 2015 and 2016’s previous record.
For the 44th September in a row, the planet experienced temperatures warmer than the 20th century average. It’s also the 429th consecutive month
While the oceans recorded their 4th warmest September, land areas recorded their hottest September.
Russia, western areas of the US, and parts of Asia were some areas with record warm temperatures. In the US, it was split, with Florida recording warmer-than-average temperatures.
In fact, the Suncoast experienced one of its hottest Septembers on record.
September 2020 was the third hottest on the Suncoast (numbers are recorded at SRQ). September 2019 holds the record for hottest September, averaging at 84.8°F.
We broke or tied five daily records for warmest highs or record warm lows.
For precipitation, it was not as notable. We were slightly wetter than the average.
