SARASOTA, Fla. (SNN TV) – Groups that are trying to get abortion rights on the ballot in Florida say they’ve hit a major milestone.

Floridians Protecting Freedom posted on social media platform X that it has enough petitions verified with the state of Florida to qualify for Supreme Court review.

The deadline to process petitions is Feb. 1, 2024, but FPF wants all petitions signed and sent by the end of the year to ensure there’s time to process and count them.

FPF said on its website it’s a statewide campaign of allied organizations and citizens trying to protect Floridians’ access to reproductive health care.

The alliance gathered more than 600,000 signatures so far. That’s more than two-thirds of the signatures they need to get the right to an abortion on the ballot in 2024.

To place a constitutional amendment on the ballot, proponents of an amendment must collect signatures equal to 8% of the total number of votes cast in the last presidential election.

For the 2024 election, that’s close to 900,000 signatures. If the amendment gets on the ballot in 2024, it would need at least 60% approval from voters to pass.
