WSNN- The White House is slamming Florida Republicans as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill passed its first Florida Senate Committee this week.

“Today, conservative politicians in Florida rejected those basic values by advancing legislation that is designed to target and attack the kids that need the support the most,” said White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki.

The Biden administration weighed in on the Florida Legislation that would restrict classroom discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity.

“Across the country we are seeing republican leaders taking action to regulate what they can or cannot read, what they can or cannot learn and most troubling what they can or cannot be, this is who these kids are, and these legislators are trying to make it harder for them to be who they are,” said Psaki.

According to the bill’s sponsors, the legislation is meant to protect parent’s rights’ over their children’s education. House Bill 1557 & Senate Bill 1834, nicknamed, the ‘don’t say gay’ bill state that a school district “may not encourage classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students.”

Governor Ron DeSantis signaled his support for the legislation saying it was entirely inappropriate for teachers to behaving conversations with students about gender identity.

“Schools need to be teaching kids to read and write, they need to teach them science, history, we need more civics and understanding the U.S. Constitution and what makes our country unique all those basic stuff to get into situations where you are not having the parent, your hiding things from the parent, you’re injecting these concepts about choosing your gender that is just inappropriate for our schools,” said Florida Governor (R), Ron DeSantis.

In response, President Biden took to twitter tweeting quote “I want every member of the LGBTQI+ community — especially the kids who will be impacted by this hateful bill — to know that you are loved and accepted just as you are. I have your back, and my Administration will continue to fight for the protections and safety you deserve.”

The Bill moved forward in the Senate Education Committee in a 6-3 vote, Tuesday.

The bill analysis points to six Florida school districts, including Hillsborough and Sarasota that already have policies in place guiding teachers to let kids control who they tell about their LGBTQ status.
