The Roskamp Institute to study long-term effects of red tide on people

SARASOTA – The Roskamp Institute is launching a first-of-its-kind study this weekend.

Researchers at Roskamp focus on neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, but now they’re looking into a new study: What impact, if any, does red tide have on our health? The Roskamp Institute’s Executive Director, Michael Mullan, says his team is especially motivated to do the study, since red tide releases a neurotoxin powerful enough to kill fish and wildlife.

“That neurotoxin, we know, can cause inflammation,” Mullan said. “For years, we’ve been very interested in inflammation, particularly in our brain, because that’s a big part of things like Alzheimer’s disease. What we really want to know is, ‘Is there any possibility that toxins like red tide can contribute at all to central nervous system disorders?'”

Mullan says they’re looking for volunteers for the study, which involves measuring the red tide toxin levels in participants’ blood and checking for neurological symptoms. If you’re interested in helping to learn more about red tide’s effects, visit the clinic website here
