SARASOTA – A Sarasota theater company is thinking outside the box to keep its annual fundraising alive and on schedule.
The Players Centre for Performing Arts proves the show must go on amid a global heath pandemic. Managing Artistic Director of the Players, Jeffery Kin started “Got a Minute” back in 2006 after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“There we were in the doctors office, with my mom probably receiving the worst news of her life, and we laughed,” said Kin.
Kin says the show helps raise funds for breast cancer research and features short plays lasting about one minute…but it’s the hidden messages behind the stories that he says audiences should be on the lookout.
“The plays that we’ve gotten in are again, soup to nuts, A-Z. Some funny, some zany, there’s aliens, people fighting over bedspreads,” said Kin. “But then there’s this underline feeling of overcoming adversity, and usually overcoming adversity through humor”
Kin says that’s especially important nowadays as everyday life was put to a halt, and online became the new normal. Thus, giving Kin the idea of hosting
The Players first virtual fundraiser to not only raise awareness of but also provide entertainment to those stuck at home in self-isolation.
“The one thing that everyone has a sense of isolation, boredom, people don’t know what to do with themselves,” said Kin. “How can we help people be creative, and help them not feel isolated, and to be a part of something bigger?”
Kin says this year’s show will be a little different in the delivery, but the message stays the same. Raising awareness and bringing the arts community together again as we move slowly to return to what life used to be.
The fundraiser will broadcast Friday night on Facebook LIVE at 7:30 p.m. To watch the performance visit
