SARASOTA COUNTY (WSNN) – It’s Election Day and Suncoast voters are heading to the polls, wearing masks of course.

People are voting for local representatives in the sheriff’s department, city commission, and the school board.

Poll workers at Sarasota County precincts say the coronavirus isn’t stopping people from voting as a steady stream of people head to the polls.

But the virus forced precinct consolidation in Sarasota County from 99 to 82.

The Sarasota Supervisor of Elections says as of 3 pm they had 28.93 percent turnout.

Voters have different reasons for showing up to the polls.

Sarasota Voter, Piper Lyons, says it’s important to vote during the primaries because it all starts with the locals. Her focus this year is the children.

“Probably my biggest thing right now is the saving of our children,” Lyons said. “There is so much human trafficking that’s going on and if you ask me, there’s only one party that is actually paying attention to that and solving it.”

“I care about my children’s future and I just think it’s awesome that we have still a say in the direction of our city, our county, and our country,” Sarasota voter, Kristen Zamber, said.
