SARASOTA COUNTY (WSNN) – It’s been a really bad year, so how about some good New Year’s resolutions? SNN talks to some people at ‘Our Y’ in Sarasota.

After a challenging year, 2020 is officially behind us, and I think we’re all ready to step int to the new year with a healthy mindset.

“I got overweight, I fell into depression, I gained like 30 pounds,” Sarasota Resident ‘Our Y’ member, Steve Novia said.

So, Novia got a head start to his New Year’s resolution by becoming a member of ‘Our Y’ in December.

“A new me, a healthier me. I want to live a longer life, a better life,” Novia said. “My main goal is to lose this stomach of mine.”

For longtime fitness junkies, some members were forced to adapt in 2020.

“If I was going to keep that commitment to myself, I had to learn how to workout at home in my backyard, in my living room, in my bedroom, and just really implement things that I had never done in my life,” long-time Our Y member Lisi Brannen said.

They say they plan to incorporate the hybrid gym lifestyle of exercising at home and at the gym, in the new year.

“I really enjoyed yoga at home, so I think that as we progress into 2021, I’m going to take some yoga classes,” long-time Our Y member, Marty Lebron said.

The 2020 version of ‘Our Y,’ like the virtual studio, remains.

“So if people are a little concerned about being in a group setting, they can go in there,” Our Y Interim President, Jim Purdy said.

Instructors emphasize the importance of a healthy mindset.

“We’ve all learned in 2020 that exercise is one of the top three ways to build your immune system, and so it’s so important for everybody,”  Our Y Instructor, Janet Boyden said.

And if you’re nervous over taking that first step, gym-rats have some tips.

“Be patient and don’t give up,” Brannen said.

“Take baby steps and don’t get overwhelmed,” Lebron said.

If you want to get moving at ‘Our Y,’ it’s open on Saturday from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm and on Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.   For more information on ‘Our Y,’ click here.
