SARASOTA – One person is dead and another faces second degree murder charges after a shooting incident in a Sarasota neighborhood.

Deputies have arrested 28-year-old Christian Perkins after witnesses say they heard two men arguing and then several shots fired the Advenir at the Gateway Lakes apartment complex.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office says they were called to the 1000 block of Marlin Lakes Circle after reports of a shooting just late Wednesday night.

When deputies arrived they found one victim lying on the breezeway between apartments. According to deputies Perkins fled on foot and later called 911 to report he was attacked by the victim.

Witnesses tell Deputies Deputies say all parties involved in the shooting have been accounted for and there’s no threat to the community.

Perkins says he admitted to the shooting but claimed it was self-defense. Investigators were able to determine Perkins did not shoot the victim in self-defense and that the two men knew each other.

The SCSO will not be releasing the victim’s names under Marsy’s Law. Perkins remains in custody without bond and is facing one single count of Second Degree Murder.
