SARASOTA – Many members of the LGBTQ+ community say support from their allies has been crucial in teaching tolerance and acceptance.
“Really want to be bold and vibrant obviously ties in with the LGBTQ community with the flags over here in the corner and again with the rainbow, keeping it very innocent very youthful,” said Brandon Thrift.
It’s been more than a year since Thrift, a Sarasota based artist, embarked on an artistic journey that quickly took a life of its own.
Known around the Suncoast as the “Spread Love” artist, Thrift’s message of loving one another captures the spirit of Pride Month and served as the inspiration for his latest creation. One you can’t miss.
His latest mural can be found on the intersection of Pineapple and Cocoanut Ave. near the heart of downtown Sarasota.
“Tie into what Pride means and what they have to offer,” said Thrift. “It promotes – this is a promotion of equality, this is a promotion of justice, peace, just community more than anything.”
Sharon Carole, owner of Sage Restaurant & the Bijou Café owns the building and worked with Thrift to add a bit of color to the neighborhood that compliments the Pride Walk, which lays just feet away.
As allies to the LGBTQ + community, Carole and Thrift wanted to do their part and show their support by spreading a vibrant message to “Love One Another.”
“We’re both very passionate to about giving to the LGBTQ + community and being allies for them.” said Carole. “The more allies that the LGBTQ community realize they have the safer they’ll feel.”
Thrift says he was surprised by the success his “Spread Love” art has received; and that his message goes hand in hand with what Pride Month represents for the LGBTQ + community and their allies.
“It boils down to the pertinent concept of love and what love truly is, and love is – its infinite in its potential,” said Thrift. “It can be whatever it is, however you perceive it, however you feel. Whatever you think love is that’s what love is to you.”
