Places of worship practice safety precautions amid coronavirus spread

SARASOTA – Have faith, not fear. That’s what the Diocese of Venice is saying when it comes to the coronavirus outbreak.

Incarnation Catholic Church places a sign of the precautions they’re asking their patrons to take. It includes smiling at each other during sign of peace instead of shaking hands, receiving communion in hand, not by mouth; and the parish removed holy water from the fonts.

Incarnation Catholic Church’s administrator, Father Eric Scanlan, says he believes this is good opportunity to raise awareness about not spreading illnesses.

“This is a good thing for us as a church and the community, to be more aware of the fact that these diseases, these illnesses spread through our own precautions that we can take,” Father Scanlon said. “These like preventing flu, the next flu season, this might be helpful.”

Father Scanlan says he doesn’t want anyone to be afraid of gathering together during mass. He says he just wants people to take the basic safety precautions.
