PALMETTO – Palmetto High School honor students are navigating their way through pandemic learning but they are still helping their peers along the way.

Thanks to COVID-19 Palmetto high honor students weren’t allowed to offer in person tutoring sessions, losing an opportunity to get community service hours

“So I got together a few people, he is the main brains behind the whole operation and then we came up with the tutoring program,” said Palmetto High Senior Tutor, Emma Perry.

Palmetto Seniors and juniors are now offering online tutoring for all Palmetto High students who need help with homework or SAT and ACT prep

“When you sign up you specify what level you are at in the core subjects and if you’re doing an elective, you have a couple electives available,” said Palmetto High School Senior Tutor, Hogan Nease.

The student tutors say the online aspect makes the process more streamlined

“And it’s so convenient being able to be after school and at home so kids can take the bus home and from the comfort of their own home can do it rather than having to find a ride while staying after school,” said Perry.

The students even developed a sign up portal for those interested

“What I was able to do was use existing resources and combine everything that we need in one space,” said Nease.

The program has been so successful, that staff advisors want it continue even when this pandemic is behind us.

“Because it was just an idea, and luckily everything came together and the school was super supportive of it and so I’m just really happy and excited to give back to the school that we have spent four years in,” said Perry.
