SARASOTA – The North Port Police Department says we can all foster kindness during foster care awareness month…

“There are around 2000 children locally in foster care, when they come into their foster homes, many times they come with only the clothes on their backs,” said Director of Development for the Twig, Nicole Britton.

That’s why North Port police are helping ‘foster kindness’ by holding a clothing drive for, The Twig a big resource for foster kids.

“We have a boutique that’s only open to children in foster care, where they can shop completely free of charge for clothing and shoes,” said Britton.

Whether they’re for a newborn or a teen, clothes can be dropped off at the North Port Police department and City Hall.

“As long as their at style that a child or teen would want to wear, we do except new or very gently used items regularly however in this collection they are looking for new items only, we take everything from socks and underwear’s, sneakers, t-shirts, basketball shorts, all of those items that any child would need,” said  Britton.

In addition to providing kids with a wardrobe, North Port Police hope to strengthen their community relationship

“The only times that they see us is when something is going wrong. Our officers are out there doing good in this community every minute of every day so to have some of that interaction with our residents and help them be able to help I think goes a long way,” said City of North Port PIO, Josh Taylor.

The Twig’s, Nicole Britton says the need for helping foster kids, is always here.

“Without that support of our community we are not able to reach those children in the way we really want to so when the community sets up and supports us by stocking our boutique, you’re helping bless the lives of children in foster care here in our community,” said Britton.

Drop off locations are at the Police Department lobby at 4980 City Hall Blvd., and the City Hall lobby at 4970 City Hall Blvd.
