New legal age to drive a golf cart in Florida

FLORIDA (SNN TV) – Florida teenagers won’t be able to drive golf carts without a permit or license.

That’s after Governor Ron DeSantis signed HB 949, which bans young drivers from public streets.

The Herald-Tribune reports that Florida law used to allow 14-year-olds to drive a golf cart and made it difficult for local government to enact their own laws to raise the age.

Now you can face a noncriminal traffic violation such as a moving violation if you’re under 18 and don’t have a learner’s permit or driver’s license. People 18 and older have to have a government ID to drive.

According to Florida statute, a golf cart is “a motor vehicle that is designed and manufactured for operation on a golf course for sporting or recreational purposes and that is not capable of exceeding speeds of 20 miles per hour.”
