MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (SNN) — Manatee County commissioners are considering how to build affordable housing, including tiny home communities playing a role.

The Herald-Tribune reports the commission directed county staff to prepare an amendment to the county’s land development code. The amendment would clarify to developers that they can build tiny homes on properties zoned for multifamily housing.

The resolution will be considered at a future meeting.

Manatee County commissioners are also implementing policies to encourage residential development on industrial land.

This comes after the Florida legislature passed the Live Local Act. It appropriated $771 million for housing projects, and the law allows affordable housing to be built on non-residential zoned districts. That includes industrial and commercial to provide options for major employers to build affordable housing.
