PALMETTO, Fla. (SNN) — Manatee County Animal Welfare has seen an increasing number of stray dogs coming into their shelter over the past few months,  leaving it at max capacity.

“Officers have brought them after being found on the streets of Manatee County or they been found by a citizen who has founds a lost pet so they will drive them to our bishop center animal shelter,” Hans Wohlgefahrt, the shelter’s communication coordinator said.

Wohlgefahrt said they have been seeing on an average 11 stray dogs a day.

“We get these lost pets. We don’t really know anything about them, so we don’t know what their story is how they ended up on the street. We hope they are missing and that they are microchip or licensed,” Wohlegfahrt said.

The shelter is waiving all their adoption fees and encourages the community to foster, if they can’t adopt. The county has also launched a website to try to reconnect pet owners with their pets.
