Macular Degeneration Treatment

Dr. Mali

BRADENTON – For some people, vision loss starts to become a serious problem as you age.  A new treatment helps stop vision loss in tracks.

Seniors with Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration, AMD, face significant vision loss. Procedures have been done, but require frequent doctor’s visits. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a new eye injection that lasts three months.

“From our current center of care, it’s the longest-lasting drug potentially that we currently have,” Dr. Jousha Mali said.

The Eye Associate Retinal Specialist, Dr. Joshua Mali says this not only helps with vision but with a patient’s lifestyle.

“Whether that’s their hobbies and having to come into appointments,” Dr. Jousha Mali said. “So, we’re hoping to help decrease their burden, help to give them great visual outcomes, and provide the best possible care for patients.”

After undergoing previous procedures, 20-20 vision patient, Larry Hoffheimer, says being proactive can keep your sight clear.

“If you catch it immediately, any vision loss, you don’t have any vision loss,” Mr. Hoffheimer said. “If you wait, which a lot of people do, particular seniors; you think it’s a result of aging. They wait too long, and by the time they do it, they get the injections, but the vision that they’ve lost is most often not restored.”

Larry Hoffheimer says he hopes to make his vision last as long as it can, even if its only six months.

He wants people to know what AMD symptoms to look for and how to treat it. The Macular Degeneration Association offers educational events 15 to 20 times a year.

“It’s made a big difference, nobody is doing this,” Mr. Hoffheimer said.
