SARASOTA – Local blood banks have reached a crisis point because of coronavirus concerns. Suncoast Blood Centers liaison, A.J. Janson, says there is only a two–day supply of blood for the Suncoast.
Janson says fears are unfounded. Donating and receiving blood is safe because COVID–19 is an upper–respiratory virus. It does not transmit through the blood.
Nonetheless, sterile needles are used, the blood is tested and donations are conducted in a clean hospital environment.
Janson says donations are critical.
“We cannot manufacture blood,” A.J. Janson said. “Blood has a short life–span. So, that it is critical, that if you are feeling healthy, and you feel like you want to do something with your community and save a life, fill these empty containers.”
Janson says blood only lasts about 30 days. So, they need constant blood of donors. Suncoast Blood Centers provides blood to seven hospitals in the area.
