SARASOTA, Fla. (SNN) – Ageism in the job market is when companies discriminate based on age usually affecting older applicants.

SNN spoke to a career counselor Madeline Mann to tell us some of the obstacles older candidates face.

“One of the reason why a lot of people in their 50’s and 60’s struggle to land jobs is because all the things they have done in the past to land their previous jobs, suddenly doesn’t work anymore,” Mann said.

Mann said older candidates could also be labeled as overqualified, which would make it more difficult for them to find jobs later in life.

“Companies are afraid they are going to hire you and you will leave quickly because you are bored”
