SARASOTA (WSNN) – A Sarasota High School student is making a name for himself cutting hair.

Looks are deceiving. While Landon Garrett is 17 years old, he is certified to cut your hair.

“I did it one time, cut my friend’s hair and after that, I just fell in love with it,” Garrett said.

After years of getting his hair cut by Dennis Hootie Ford, the owner of Mankind Barber Lounge, Garret had a conversation with him that changed his life.

“One day, he was cutting my hair like any other time and he just asked me if I ever thought about cutting hair,” Garrett said.

“I knew he had the drive and his dad told me he was dedicated to anything he do, so I knew he would be a good fit for this,” Ford said.

So, Garrett went to barber school, put in his cutting hours, passed the exam, got his certificate, and got a job at Mankind Barber Lounge. This, all while going to Sarasota High School.

“He picked up real quick,” Ford said.

“At first, I didn’t think I was going to do it, but I told myself any opportunity I come across, I’m just going to take it,” Garrett said.

His age may fool you….

“There are definitely a lot of people who wouldn’t trust me cutting their hair,” Garrett said.

For those who put trust in his clippers, he gets the job done. Ford has full faith in this budding barber.

“He got you, I promise,” Ford said. “He’s doing a good job, he’s doing a great job actually.”

Garrett is proof, there is no age limit to your dreams.

“If you find something that you love early, it’s better to start early than later,” Garrett said. “You get a head start ahead of everybody else.”

“I’m already doing what I love, so I’m just blessed,” Garrett said.

After he graduates, Garret says this is it for him. He plans to work full-time at the Mankind Barber Lounge in downtown Sarasota.
