SARASOTA – A gas leak forces an evacuation to a couple of businesses on the Suncoast.

Around ten in the morning, dispatch received a call about a natural gas line struck in the 1200 block of 2nd street next to North Tamiami Trail.

Sarasota police, Sarasota county fire department, and TECO arrived to mitigate the gas leak.

2nd street was temporarily blocked from Cocoanut Ave to U.S. 41.

Battalion Chief of Sarasota Fire Department, Mike Sullivan, says they were able to shut the valve off enough to be just a small nuisance leak,as it wasn’t deep.

“There were construction crews that were working on some concrete curbing right here in the adjacent area,” Battalion Chief Mike Sullivan said. “The natural gas line, approximately two inches for the natural gas line, was struck a few feet down on the ground.”

TECO remained on scene to mitigate the leak completely. No injuries were reported.
